Instagram debuts Direct, letting users share photos and videos with select friends

Invite blocks in hand, we've braved the cold New York weather to pop by Instagram's big event. Naturally, the photo sharing service kicked off with some bullish numbers, noting that it has grown from 80 million to 150 million users this year. But the company's CEO, Kevin Systrom, noted that today was all about looking forward to 2014. The big news was the announcement of Instagram Direct, a way of limiting specific photos and videos to select groups of up to 15 friends (a number the CEO noted serendipitously, is the same as the number of seconds you can shoot in Instgram video) . The feature exists as a module in the Share To section of the app, showing a drop down of your friends. From there you can select who you want to receive a specific image or video, so if you want to, say, take a picture of your brunch, not every single follower has to look at your scrambled eggs.

All of the "moments" shared through the feature live in an inbox, so you can check out all of those photos in a private feed. Only people you follow can send you images and photos through direct and vice versa. If someone you don't follow attempts to send you something, you'll see a request from them. If you know the person but aren't interested in following them (too many scrambled eggs photos, no doubt), you can chose to receive direct moments from them without following them -- and you can always take them off that list at any time. When the user is still in pending mode, you wont be able to see the image they're sending, making it easier to ignore them.

You can send photos and videos with text, but not text alone, naturally. Images and videos, Systrom added, is what the new feature is all about. According to Systrom, the new feature is all about "connecting people around moments." Once a friend looks at the image, you'll see a check mark next to it. If they like it, you'll see a heart. It's not quite the ephemeral Snapchat-inspired update a number of outlets were predicted, but it'll likely push Instagram usage up even further, as users become less selective about what they send through the service. The update is available in the 5.0 versions of the iOS and Android apps today, by way of the Apple App Store and Google Play, just in time for selective holiday image sending. Cover's context-aware Android lock screen launches on Google Play

Cover's context-aware Android lock screen launches on Google Play

Context-sensitive interfaces like Aviate and Google Now are on the rise in the Android world, and Cover is taking advantage of that spotlight by releasing its dynamic lock screen on Google Play as a public beta. The updated front end works much as it did in the invitation-only test, automatically changing app shortcuts and settings as you move from place to place. It's also easy to peek into apps or switch between them. Most of the improvements lie below the surface, Cover says -- the new version maintains an app's exact state while peeking, improves KitKat compatibility, includes tutorials and offers more customization. Whether or not you're a Cover veteran, you're now just a click or two away from trying the updated software for yourself.

Nokia Motion Monitor physical activity tracker app launched for Lumia 1520

Nokia Motion Monitor physical activity tracker app launched for Lumia 1520

Nokia has released the Motion Monitor app, which it had teased a few months back, for the Lumia 1520.

The Motion Monitor app is currently in beta version, and will be an exclusive to the Lumia 1520, as the app requires a quad-core processor to work. So, until Nokia or Microsoft release another quad-core Windows Phone, the app will only work on the Lumia 1520.

Motion Monitor basically tracks your physical activity, such as motion and steps, as the name suggests itself. It runs in the background without any need to manually launch it (hence requiring the use of one of the cores). The app takes advantage of a sensor in the Lumia 1520 and doesn't require much power as Nokia also mentions the "app uses power - but consumption is low".

After about 10 days, the Motion Monitor app provides you the details of your overall activity with levels like low, medium and high. Motion Monitor offers more detailed reports, which highlight different statistics. The app features Live Tiles compatibility, displaying information on lock and homescreens

Nokia in its announcement describes the Motion Monitor app's interface, saying, "The Timeline is where your daily activity is recorded. Here you can see when you were moving, how intense the activity was and your total step count. The Events view gives you insights into your motion and summaries of your day, while the Week and Month views will help you discover if there are any patterns to your movement."

Nokia reiterates that Motion Monitor is in beta stage, and may have some glitches, such as the detection of steps inside a moving car. Few other limitations include support for the English language only.

Angry Birds Go! now available as a free download on leading mobile platforms

The latest iteration in Rovio Entertainment's popular series of Angry Birds games called Angry Birds Go! is now available on leading mobile platforms. The game is Rovio's first major free-to-play Angry Birds title and the first time players get to see the Angry Birds world in 3D as they race through Piggy Island.

In Angry Birds Go! players can jump behind the wheel of a downhill kart and race as Red, Chuck, Stella, King Pig, and other characters from the Angry Birds universe. The game features over 50 different soapbox karts and a selection of tracks ranging from canyons to speedways and stunt roads to air courses.

"Angry Birds Go! is our first major free-to-play Angry Birds game, and while we're super excited to step into this new territory, we're also staying true to our roots," said Jami Laes, the Executive Vice President of Games at Rovio Entertainment. "As with every previous Angry Birds game, there's lots of free content and we have great new updates already planned - including the eagerly awaited arrival of multiplayer."

Though the game is free to download, Rovio is offering in-app purchases to enhance the gaming experience for those willing to shell out the bucks.

"We do offer some really awesome premium content for fans who want a bit more, but we've designed the game so that you don't have to pay to have a great time," Laes added.

Angry Birds Go! is now available on iOS, Android, Windows Phone 8 and BlackBerry 10
Asus Padfone mini 4.3 with quad-core Snapdragon 400, Android 4.3 launched

Asus Padfone mini 4.3 with quad-core Snapdragon 400, Android 4.3 launched

After much speculation, Asus' latest smartphone-tablet hybrid, the Padfone mini 4.3, is now official. Asus launched the Padfone mini 4.3 at an event in Taiwan. The device has been priced at 11,990 New Taiwanese dollars, which translates to roughly Rs. 25,000.
As of now, the Asus Padfone mini 4.3 will be available in Taiwan only, and there is no word on the availability of the latest Padfone in other regions. However, Engadget claims that the Padfone mini 4.3 is expected to be rolled out in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Russia, and Singapore.

The Asus Padfone mini 4.3, much like its predecessor the Padfone Infinity, comes with a tablet docking station, which in this case features a 7-inch HD (720x1280) Super IPS display. Like previous iterations, the smartphone fits into the tablet dock, powering the tablet with its hardware.

The Padfone mini 4.3 runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean out-of-the-box, and comes with dual-SIM (GSM+GSM) functionality, which makes it the first smartphone-tablet hybrid from Asus supporting dual-SIM.

It sports a 4.3-inch qHD (540x960) Super IPS display which boasts a pixel density of 256ppi. Internally, the Padfone mini 4.3 packs a 1.4GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 (MSM8226) processor along with 1GB of RAM. It sports an 8-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and also includes a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. The Padfone mini 4.3 comes with 16GB inbuilt storage and can be expanded up to 64GB with the help of microSD card. Connectivity options on the Padfone mini include WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, AGPS, GLONASS and 3G.

The Asus Padfone mini 4.3 smartphone packs a 1500mAh battery, while the 7-inch tablet dock equips a 2200mAh battery. Interestingly, the smartphone can be charged by docking into the station. The Asus Padfone mini 4.3 will be available in Black, Pink and White colour variants.

In September, Asus launched the refreshed version of the Padfone Infinity.
